Get Ready ...

Winter

Winter

Winter gives us a rest from outdoor gardening, with freezing temperatures and some snow and ice in most years. Temperatures often dip below 0° F. We are in USDA Zone 6 and we can grow a large variety of plants, especially native plants.

Spring

Spring

Spring can tease us with warm weather one day and frost the next. It can be warm in the valleys, but cool and wet in the higher elevations into late May. May 1 is the average last front "killing" date, but planting later is recommended for both tender and heat-loving plants.

Summer

Sunny

Summer temperatures can be quite hot, exceeding 100° F. Summer is a dry season and we recommned drought-tolerant plants. Supplemental watering is necessary for most plants. Our long summer days provide lots of sun for beautiful flowers. Most vegetables and fruits both grow well in the Lewis-Clark Valley.

Fall

Fall

Fall is a beautiful time of year. Begin watching weather reports at this time in order to protect frost-sensitive plants. Even after the first frost occurs (the average time is late September), we usually experience several weeks of warm temperatures.
